Broward's Hurricane Isaac

Hurricane Isaac in Broward

OK, so in Broward county, what was the damage? A few chairs fell over? A few trees got beat up?

All in all, we were very lucky with the weather.
Hurricanes in the past like Andrew and Wilma were devastating to our community. Isaac was a small reminder of some of the dangers we face when we don't maintain our trees.

In preparation for the hurricane and future hurricane's, old and new customers had us come out and trim back trees, thin and raise, and help clear some yards so the debris doesn't go flying everywhere.   In some situations, we came across a dangerous condition where special safety measures and care needed to be put in place.
One of the biggest hazardous conditions for a tree business is cutting trees away from power lines.  In general, the top two lines are the "hot" ones.  If these two are connected by anything that conducts electricity, ZAP!!!  Sadly, many people die from this.  If a tree is approaching a condition where danger is going to or starting to happen, you should contact FPL.  They will inspect it and if the condition is hazardous to their specifications, they will likely trim it back minimally.

So, if your tree is approaching any kind of wires and a dangerous condition is forthcoming, what should you do?  Call All American Tree Service of Broward at 954-899-0750 and a trained expert will come out, evaluate the situation and give you a free estimate on what the job will cost and how soon we can come out and do the work.  Of course, while we're out there, we will be happy to look at other work that needs to be done.

Did You Know?

Trees - Did you know

Regular care for trees will be more cost effective than dealing with damage and neglect

The Journal of Arboriculture has published studies that prove that there is a significant cost savings to routinely maintain trees, rather than neglect. Many people think the cost of tree care is unnecessary or, at the very least, a very low priority when funds are low, or just as a money saving consideration. This actually proves to be the opposite effect in almost all cases. The cost of cleaning up damage that is a product of neglect can prove to be more costly than regular tree care.
As a result, cities have crews set up to specifically care for trees by either hiring their own team, or contracting with tree service companies like All American Tree Service of Broward, Inc.  These teams or companies regularly prune and care for trees. Trees can increase the property value by 25 percent or more.  This is based on the location, type, and condition of the tree.  Of course, trees also have environmental and social benefits.  "Various studies have shown that trees reduce pollution in many ways, as well as help social behavior improve by raising the self-esteem of neighborhoods."

Sad Story

The Senator Burned

3,500-year-old Tree Burnt in Florida

The sunshine state of Florida lead an investigation that states tree trimmers may be responsible for a huge fire that completely destroyed a tree over 3,000 years old, which was known as the oldest tree in the entire USA. The tree was known as a bald cypress and stood over One Hundred and Twenty-Five feet. The tree was affectionately known as "The Senator,". Not was this tree only the oldest in America but was actually the 5th oldest tree in the entire world. was also the fifth-oldest tree in the world and the signature attraction at Big Tree Park in Longwood, north of Orlando.

The Bald Cypress was also a main attraction at Big Tree Park in Longwood, Florida.

Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services forestry division spokesman said it would appear that someone started a small fire by collecting twigs and debris close to the tree which caused the entire tree to go up in flames.

"From my observations it appears to be arson," Mike Martin said. "It looks like the fire was concentrated right where the tree was."

Officials reported that a passerby saw and called in the fire before 6am. A chimney effect was created by the hollow tree which burned for about 3 hours. The fire was burning from the inside out and black smoke and ash was seen in the sky about the central Florida area.

The Senator, which was affectionately known to Floridians as "The Big Tree", was named for state lawmaker M.O. Overstreet,
who had made the tree (including surrounding land) in to a donation to Seminole County in the 1920's. Before having its uppor branches destroyed, the Senator once was as tall as 165 feet, which was back in 1925.

Update

It was reported that two witnesses identified 26-year-old Sara Barnes as the person who caused the Senator to burn and collapse.
The tree stood at 118-foot-tall and was an attraction in Florida long before Disney World was built.
